City of Longmont Mascot
What started as a joke with my boss at the start of the pandemic has evolved into a fully realized foam mascot suit used in marketing videos, parades, and other public appearances.
This suit now comes with a variety of absurd props and costumes, and will be featured prominently in this summer's Recreation campaign.
Learning Pathways Merit Badge Program
To better standardize our skillsets across the team and to give folks objectives to work toward, I am developing the SOPs, training materials, and tests for a variety of communications and marketing-related disciplines. Staff can prepare for and then take an assessment to earn a merit badge in any discipline they like, and in turn can develop other staff in these skills.
The design of the merit badges use a limited palette to save money in embroidery.
Comms Call Signs
As a team building retreat exercise, we gave each other good, old-fashioned aviation call signs! Each person was given a sheet of paper with their name on it, and each team member added one call sign idea to every person's sheet except their own. Then, we each read out our list of call signs and chose our favorite, thus eliminating the unfortunate happenstance of ending up with a nickname that was unwelcome. Each person had at least 14 options to choose from, and options had to be kind-hearted or agreed-upon inside jokes (hence, Freakshow). I noted the names folks chose for themselves and turned them into call sign art in my evening hours, sending out a certificate and City pin to thank them for their attention and hard work in the retreat.
I used many different Vecteezy.com clipart elements to fashion these graphics quickly. For anyone wondering, my call sign is Chaos Pixie.
Cards for Community Services
Using a "National Month of..." list combined with City of Longmont divisions, this game is a way to stretch our creative brains when making relevant and unexpected content. Choose one "National Month..." card and one "Division" card and combine them in a way that makes sense for marketing collateral and social media. For example: National Pie Month + Housing and Community Investment = "You could be learning the perfect pie crust in your new kitchen: learn more about our First Time Homebuyers program today!"
Say It In Emojis
I used to ask my team to give me their marketing message in one sentence. Then, it went down to five words. Now? My challenge is "Can you say it in emojis?" In a world where visual literacy and brevity are paramount for capturing attention, you must be able to demonstrate your concept, program, or service in a hieroglyphic shorthand before you can effectively communicate it to the digital marketplace. This is also a tremendously funny game that gets the brain cells working overtime.
